THE YEAR THE SEEDS REFUSED

I’ve planted a garden for a lot of years. I know how to plant stuff. All kinds of stuff. I’m comfortable with corn and bean seeds. I start squash, cucumber, and cantaloupe seeds inside and transplant the plants to the garden the day they poke their little leaves out of the ground.

San Juan Record (Monticello) – The City of Blanding decided it had better not organize a July Fourth celebration, so local citizens and businesses did. They canceled the parade, but scheduled a “Ride on Main Street.” Booths were set up on private property. The day concluded with a gymkhana at the Lynn Stevens Arena. ∞ The San Juan County School Board is making plans for the reopening of school this fall. Superintendent Ron Nielson said, “It may look different for each student, with some learning at home and some at school, and it could change with a new outbreak.” ∞ The ninth person died of complications of coronavirus in San Juan County and total cases was at 400 as of press time. The Navajo Nation is continuing to have 57-hour weekend curfews. San Juan County, NM is also hard hit with 2,405 cases of coronavirus.

In March of 1963 my father died of a brain tumor, brought on by the nuclear bombs they were testing in Nevada. Mother signed us up for Social Security because our only source of income was 270 acres of dryland farm. I got $63 a month for my share and every cent if it went directly into the bank. Mother was a wise money manager.
