San Juan Record (Monticello) – When the Blanding City Council decided against a July Fourth celebration, private citizens decided to take the matter into their own hands. A group of Blanding businesses and residents, led by Toniee Lewis, organized a private celebration. An off-highway poker run will open the weekend on Friday evening. A drive-in movie will be shown at the high school parking lot beginning at 9:30. A flag ceremony is scheduled July 4 at 8:00 a.m. at the cemetery. A “Ride on Main Street” is scheduled at 10:00 and no candy will be airborne. Food and other booths will be set up on private property belonging to Cheryl Bowers at 132 South Main. The theme for the event is “Free to Be Me.” ∞ The School and Institutional Trust Administration controls 5,000 acres in the Spanish Valley area and has announced plans to develop both residential and commercial property. That has people in the area concerned and the San Juan County Commission has been trying to come up with a planning document for the area. At the June 16 meeting, that plan was postponed. Lake Powell fishing report: Stripers are starting to slurp on the surface, but only for about a minute. Wayne Gustsveson writes that boats must move in quickly and lures must be cast in front of the lead fish. Casting in the middle of slurp will startle the fish and they will dive. After they dive, they will drop to 35 to 40 feet and dropping a spoon in the middle of a school can catch more fish than while they are on the surface. ∞ On June 6, a hail storm almost destroyed gardens in and around Blanding.
