Funeral Services for Bertha Ella (Babe) Merz Leffel were held at Burn Cemetery, near Egnar, Co. in San Miguel County, on February 28, 2020, with Pastor Marvin Graves officiating. Viewing was at Ertel Funeral Home on Feb. 27, 2020, from 4:00-6:00 PM in Cortez, Co.
Bertha passed away on February 24, 2020 at Vista Grande Nursing Home in Cortez, Co. after only 1 week there. She passed peacefully with her family by her side.
Bertha was born December 29, 1920 at Panora, Iowa, to John Matthew Merz born in Essingen, Wurttenburg, Germany to a family of 22 children and Myrtle O’Dessa Redshaw Merz born to a family of 5 children. Myrtle’s dad was born in Longford, Derbyshire, England. Babe was the 6th born of 13 siblings - 10 girls and 3 boys.
She came to Ucolo, Utah with her parents from Iowa when she was 13 years old. She attended school in Iowa, Ucolo and Blanding, Utah. On December 24, 1939, she married Eldon Derwin Leffel in Monticello, Utah. They originally Homesteaded at Summit Point, Colorado and over the course of their marriage lived in numerous other places, finally settling in Dove Creek.
Babe was a housewife and mother and had a lifelong passion for gardening and all types of needlework - winning many ribbons every year at the County Fair. She was crocheting on an afghan just a few weeks before her death. She belonged to the VFW Auxiliary and dispatched for the ambulance for 30 years.
Surviving Babe is daughter, Dorothy Heffner, Dove Creek, Co.; son, Layne Leffel (Helen), Cortez, Co.; daughters Connie Martin, Waterville, Me.; Mary Taylor, Dove Creek, Co.; Audrey Gregory (Mike), Palisade, Co; and Shauna Abney (Russ). Bloomfield, NM.
Youngest sister; Nadine Schear of Dove Creek, Co. and numerous Nieces and Nephews

Redshaw Merz; sisters, brothers, brothers-in-law and sister-in-law; Clara Knox (Harry), Alice Cupp (Jack), Ethel Butt (Delmar), Esther Shafer (Earl), Dorothy Bishop (Bob), Herbert (Bud) Merz, Marge Young (Harold), Betty Young (Bob), Robert Merz (Pat), Carolyn Black (Calvin), Donald Merz and brother-in-law Raymond Schear.
Granny Leffel was preceded in death by grandsons Brian Leffel and Kirby Taylor, and great grandson Blake Ryan.
